Top three Defenses of 2018

Last season saw an uptick of amazing defensive plays stemming from the teams who were bound for the playoffs just on great defense alone. The Patriots, which are considered one the best offensive teams in the league thanks to pretty boy Tom Brady, has never truthfully been known for it’s defense. It’s good, but it’s not very consistent, when they do win the Super Bowl, they have the top defense at the time, but  last season, the Eagles had the #4 four defense to go along with their top offense, while the Patriots had the overall #29 defense.  Why does this all matter.  Because you win Super Bowls with top defenses even if you have an average offense. Looking into the past to see teams who won their respective Super Bowls typically correlate to having a top defense.  Here are my top three picks for next seasons defenses:

3.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had the number 2 defense last season, and there is no reason to believe they will fall out of the top 3.  Their one departure in the off season in free agency came from slot corner Aaron Colvin, who in my opinion will not make a big deal in their passing defense.  He was a reliable tackler, but does not prevent them from easily replacing him with any of the number of top corners they have. With Jacksonville selecting Tavin Bryant at DT in the first round, this will hopefully sure up their slightly open run defense since they finished 21.  Looking at their Depth chart for the upcoming football season, it appears to be a very formidable defense for any team to go through.

2.

The Vikings will have the #2 defense next season having had the best this past season.  They will fall down a spot, even though they are returning with the same exact defense they had last season that saw such an amazing ability to stop the pass and create absolutely no running room for any top running back.  They drafted a top corner in Mike Hughes out of Central Florida who will only add to their ability to prevent down the field gains, and their run blocking is already top notch.  What else can be said about a top defense in the league that will only get better. Why are they not #1, because I lost my mind.

 1.

This may look and sound crazy, but the Cleveland Browns will have the #1 defense in the league this season.  Having added EJ Gaines and TJ Carrie to the corners in free agency followed by drafting Denzel Ward fourth overall, it appears there is nothing to be gained by trying to throw down the field on this defense.  Having been 19th in passing and 14 in overall defense, they now have a significant amount of firepower on the defense to help in the passing game, not to mention the formidable front with star Myles Garrett at the end position. They finished 7th in run defense, and look to get even better.
